The Gap

Happy_ToothOne of my students lost a tooth today. An hour later, she asked me, “Why hasn’t it grown back in yet?” I told her that it would probably take a few weeks, and she seemed satisfied with that answer.

As I think about this, there are probably few things that this child has had to actually wait for in her life. She is used to a society that delivers pretty quickly, yet no matter of technology or money can make a tooth come in quicker.

Later in the day she was feeling self-conscious about the gap in her mouth, and I told her to look at the gap in mine. She laughed and then I said, “At least your tooth will grow back in, mine will cost around $3,000.” She seemed satisfied with that answer.
