I recently went to the GS4O (Garage Sale for Orphans) to benefit orphans that Help One Now is working with. Most recently they have saved nineteen children from human trafficking and do a lot of other incredible things in Haita, Zimbabwe, and Uganda.
One of the many things that I love about GS4O, is that it has a three-fold mission for the individual.
First, you can get rid of some things that you really do not need around the house. As Americans, many of us struggle with an overabundance of stuff. I am not sure about you, but I know that I have struggled with this in the past. From wanting the newest gadget to thinking I need a plethora of things, we all have things in our house that are keeping up space and guilting us to use them.
Secondly, it helps us to enter into a moment of living on mission. In what other spaces in your life can you make a sacrifice and give it directly to orphans in need? There are very few ways to do this, beyond just writing a check. There is something about selling your unneeded stuff and liberating someone else.
Third, it helps to remind you and others who might attend the sale that there is another world out there. My first GS4O was a lot of fun and my most recent was no exception. I know that a few more hundred people know about the mission of Help One Now now.
In this age of a constant media barrage, having a live event where people see each other face to face, it is beautiful to see people coming together to help those less fortunate than them.
Also you can score some great deals. I know that this is counter to my first point, but let’s be honest you totally needed Rocky 1-5 on VHS.
In all seriousness, every GS4O is a lot of fun, and reminds me why I belong to the Help One Now tribe and invite others to join in!
Here is a great video by my buddy Nick, if you want to know more!
